What can drivers do to avoid crashes like this one? Staying focused, driving at a safe speed for conditions, and never getting behind the wheel after drinking are among the simplest ways to avoid losing control of a vehicle.
What injuries commonly result when a vehicle strikes a building? Occupants of the vehicle and anyone inside the structure can suffer broken bones, head injuries, or cuts from debris, even at relatively low speeds.
What usually causes a vehicle to leave the roadway and hit a structure? Common factors include impairment, distraction, medical emergencies, and mechanical failure, though a cause isn't confirmed until investigators finish their review.
Does speed make this type of crash worse? Yes. Higher speed increases the force of impact, which raises the risk of structural damage to a building and more serious injury to anyone inside.
What to Do After a Vehicle-Into-Home Crash in Harris County, TX
If a vehicle crashes into a home, everyone involved, inside the house or in the vehicle, should be checked by medical personnel even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or head injuries for hours. Homeowners should document damage with photos before repairs begin and keep a copy of the police or constable's report for insurance purposes. If the home is structurally unsafe, follow the guidance of responding fire or building officials before reentering. Anyone who witnessed the crash should share contact information with investigators, since outside accounts can help confirm what happened before charges are decided.
