KYBURZ, El Dorado County, Calif., Oct. 20, 2026 — Two people were hurt Monday morning, October 19, in a head-on crash on westbound US Route 50 near Kyburz Drive, the California Highway Patrol said. One vehicle reportedly went down an embankment and may have entered water nearby, according to the agency's incident log.
The crash was reported shortly before 8 a.m. and involved a dark-colored vehicle and a second car, the CHP said. A caller near the scene reported seeing a vehicle from the roadway after it went off an embankment, and bystanders were reported trying to help those involved before emergency crews arrived.
The highway patrol issued a SigAlert just after 8:30 a.m., closing all lanes of US-50 west of Kyburz with no estimated reopening time. Cal Fire crews from Camino responded along with tow operators, and at least one vehicle was reported on its roof roughly 40 feet off the roadway, requiring heavy recovery equipment.
Traffic was reduced to one lane for several hours while crews worked the scene. By midmorning the highway patrol reported the road moving on a controlled, one-way basis as cleanup continued.
The cause of the crash remains under review. We hope those who were hurt recover fully.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do head-on crashes usually happen on highways like US-50?
Many start when a vehicle crosses the centerline, often during a passing attempt, a loss of control, or a driver drifting out of a lane on a curve or grade.
Do median barriers make a difference?
Yes. Physical barriers that separate opposing lanes of traffic are one of the few measures that can keep a drifting vehicle from entering oncoming lanes at all.
What should I do if I see a car drifting into my lane?
Slow down, move right toward the shoulder if possible, and avoid swerving left into the opposing lane's path. Sounding the horn can sometimes alert the other driver in time.
What injuries are common in head-on collisions?
Because closing speeds are high, head-on crashes often cause chest and head injuries, broken bones, and injuries from being thrown against the steering wheel, dashboard, or roof.
What to Do After a Head-On Crash in Kyburz, California
If you're involved in a head-on crash on a mountain highway like those near Kyburz, try to move to a safe spot off the roadway if your vehicle is drivable, and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since adrenaline can mask pain from impact. Accept evaluation from paramedics on scene, and follow up with a doctor in the days after, since some injuries, especially to the neck, back, or head, don't show symptoms right away. Get the names and badge numbers of responding officers and ask how to obtain the official collision report once it's filed. If weather or road conditions played a role, take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so, since conditions can change quickly in canyon terrain.
