Frequently Asked Questions
What makes distracted driving so risky? Taking eyes off the road for even a few seconds, especially at highway speeds, removes the time a driver needs to react to an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle drifting out of its lane.
Can road or weather conditions affect a crash like this even when the road is dry? Yes. Visibility at night, curves, and shoulder conditions can all play a role even without rain, snow or ice on the pavement.
What should someone do right after a two-vehicle crash like this one? Try to move to a safe spot if possible, call 911, and wait for law enforcement to arrive and document the scene before discussing fault.
Where do most of these highway collisions tend to happen? Two-lane rural highways with higher speed limits and no median barrier, like Highway 71 in this case, see a common pattern of head-on and crossover crashes.
