Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most head-on crashes happen?
They are more common on two-lane roads without a median, where opposing traffic is separated only by a painted center line.
What role does passing play in head-on crashes?
Attempting to pass on a two-lane road puts a vehicle directly into the opposing lane, and misjudging the gap or the other car's speed is a common cause of head-on impacts.
How do median barriers help prevent head-on crashes?
Physical barriers between opposing lanes keep a vehicle that drifts or loses control from crossing into oncoming traffic, which is why they are common on higher-speed divided highways.
What should I do if a car drifts into my lane?
Slow down, move right toward the shoulder, and sound your horn to alert the other driver. Avoid swerving sharply left, which can put you into a different lane of oncoming traffic.
