Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes head-on crashes?
They usually happen when a driver enters opposing lanes, whether by crossing a center line, drifting off course, or driving the wrong way on a divided highway, putting two vehicles on a direct collision course.
Why do head-on crashes tend to cause serious injury or death?
Because both vehicles are moving toward each other, the combined speed at impact is much higher than in a typical rear-end or side crash, which increases the force absorbed by occupants.
How can drivers lower the chance of being in a head-on crash?
Staying alert for wrong-way signage, avoiding distraction, and keeping a safe distance from the centerline on undivided roads can help drivers react in time to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
Where do head-on crashes most frequently happen?
They're common on rural highways and undivided roads with higher speed limits, where there's little or no barrier separating opposing lanes of traffic.
