Why Crashes Involving Tanker Trucks Often Require Extended Road Closures
Collisions involving tanker trucks can lead to lengthy highway closures because crews must evaluate the condition of the trailer and confirm whether hazardous materials have leaked. Even when no release occurs, emergency personnel often inspect the tanker carefully before traffic is allowed back through the area.
Head-on roadway collisions with large commercial trucks are frequently severe due to the significant weight difference between the vehicles involved. When a passenger vehicle crosses the center line, drivers traveling in the opposite direction may have very little time to avoid contact.
Investigators commonly review roadway markings, vehicle positions, and mechanical conditions after these crashes. In incidents involving hazardous cargo, safety inspections of the tanker and surrounding roadway are also part of the response process.
