How Head-On Crash Forces Affect the Upper Body
Head-on crashes can expose occupants to strong forward forces as vehicles rapidly decelerate during impact.
Seat belts, airbags, and contact with the steering wheel or dashboard can all place pressure on the chest during a collision. Even when there are no visible injuries, pain can indicate the need for medical evaluation.
Travel speed, impact angle, restraint use, seating position, and vehicle structure can all influence injury severity. Emergency crews may assess chest pain carefully because some crash-related injuries are not immediately obvious.
