San Bernardino County, CA (July 28, 2026) — A white Honda Civic and a white Subaru Crosstrek collided head-on on Monday evening, July 27, on southbound State Route 330 near a turnout between mile markers 40 and 41, near Old City Creek Road, according to dispatch records. The call came in around 7:18 p.m.

The Subaru was hit hard and its airbags deployed, dispatch information shows. Both vehicles ended up off the roadway, with debris scattered across the lanes.

At least one person was seen out of the Honda, talking on the phone, according to dispatch records. Traffic was stopped in both directions while crews worked to clear the scene.

The extent of any injuries has not been released. The cause of the wreck remained unclear as this report was filed. We hope everyone involved is safe.

How Mountain Roads Present Unique Driving Challenges?

Mountain roads include turnouts built specifically for slower vehicles to pull aside and let faster traffic pass. Drivers unfamiliar with a particular stretch of road may not anticipate these turnouts, sometimes hesitating or braking suddenly when they come into view, which can catch following traffic off guard.

Steep, sustained grades bring their own challenges, particularly on long descents. Riding the brakes continuously can cause them to overheat and lose effectiveness, a problem called brake fade, which is why mountain driving guides recommend downshifting to a lower gear rather than relying on brakes alone to control speed.

Curves combined with narrow shoulders leave very little room for error if a vehicle drifts even slightly off its intended path. Limited runoff space on either side of the road means a small mistake can send a vehicle further off the roadway than it would on a flatter, wider street, which is part of why mountain routes call for extra caution and reduced speed.
