Heartville, IL (April 28, 2026) – One person died, and two others were injured after a head-on crash south of Heartville on Monday, April 27. The two-vehicle collision happened around 12:45 p.m. on Route 45.
Emergency units responded to the scene and took three people to HSHS Saint Anthony Hospital. Daniel Bushur, 61, of rural Dieterich, died in the emergency room at 2:36 p.m.
Preliminary information indicated Bushur was traveling north on Route 45 when he crossed the centerline for an unknown reason. His vehicle then hit a southbound vehicle driven by 45-year-old Miguel Garcia-Gregorio of Flora.
Garcia-Gregorio was later transferred to a regional trauma center. His passenger was treated and released from the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation. Additional details may become available as authorities continue their review. Our condolences go out to Daniel Bushur’s loved ones, and we wish those injured a full recovery.
What Makes Head-on Crashes Especially Severe?
Head-on crashes can cause major injuries because both vehicles are moving toward each other at impact. The force can be much greater than in many rear-end or sideswipe crashes.
Centerline crossings are often reviewed closely after these collisions. Road position, speed, weather, and visibility can all affect how much time drivers have to react before impact.
Bad weather can add more risk on rural highways. Heavy rain may reduce visibility, while wind can make vehicles harder to control. Wet pavement can also increase stopping distance. In serious crashes, medical records, vehicle damage, and roadway conditions may help explain how the collision unfolded.
