Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
Chain-reaction crashes commonly happen when a driver fails to notice stopped or slowing traffic in time, usually because of speed, distraction or poor visibility, and cannot stop before hitting the vehicle ahead.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in one?
Leaving extra following distance, slowing early when brake lights appear ahead, and staying alert near intersections and highway merges can give drivers more time to react.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the road?
Turn on hazard lights, stay in the vehicle if it's safe to do so, and watch for approaching traffic until emergency crews arrive and direct the scene.
