Henrico County, VA (January 19, 2026) – A tragic multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 64 in Henrico County claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy Sunday night, following a rollover crash near the Nine Mile Rd exit.
Virginia State Police reported that the crash occurred around 8:18 p.m. near the 195-mile marker on eastbound I-64. The incident involved at least two vehicles and resulted in fatal consequences for one of the passengers.
Investigators stated that the crash began when the driver of an eastbound vehicle lost control while using a cellphone. That vehicle spun across the roadway and struck the center guardrail. A second vehicle traveling behind attempted to avoid the crash but veered off the right side of the road, broke through a guardrail, and continued down an embankment before crashing into a tree.
A 6-year-old passenger in the second vehicle, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected through the rear passenger-side window. Emergency responders rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities confirmed that his seventh birthday would have taken place next week.
Multiple emergency units responded to the devastating scene, working into the night to assess the damage and care for those involved. Additional injuries have not been detailed at this time.
The Virginia State Police have confirmed that charges are pending and are currently coordinating with the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as part of their ongoing investigation.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and seatbelt use. Our hearts go out to the child’s family during this unimaginable loss.
