What should families do after a fatal crash?

How are fatal crashes investigated?

How long do fatal-crash investigations take?
Timelines vary widely. Basic details may come out within days, but a full investigation, including toxicology results or an autopsy report, can take several weeks or longer.
What role does impairment play in fatal crashes?
Impairment from alcohol, drugs, or fatigue is a factor investigators routinely check for in fatal crashes, though it is not confirmed in every case and is typically addressed through toxicology testing as part of the autopsy process.
What to Do After a Fatal Crash in Hephzibah, Georgia
Losing someone in a crash leaves a family with urgent, practical decisions on top of grief. It helps to designate one person to communicate with the coroner's office and any investigating agency, since updates often come in slowly and piecemeal. Ask directly what the next steps are, including when an autopsy or toxicology report might be completed.
Keep a simple written record of who you've spoken with and when, including names and phone numbers. If the crash report isn't available yet, ask the agency how and when to request it. Taking care of these logistics early can make a difficult time a little more manageable.
