Frequently Asked Questions
Which vehicles are most prone to rolling over?
Taller, narrower vehicles with a higher center of gravity, such as SUVs, pickups, and vans, roll over more easily than low sedans, but any vehicle can roll over under the right conditions, including a high-speed impact like a sideswipe or T-bone.
Does wearing a seat belt change the odds of surviving a rollover?
Yes. A seat belt keeps an occupant from being thrown around the cabin or ejected, which is consistently the most serious risk in a rollover crash. Unbelted occupants are far more likely to be partially or fully ejected.
What does it mean when a rollover is described as "tripped"?
A tripped rollover happens when a tire catches a curb, soft shoulder, guardrail, or another vehicle, causing the car to flip instead of slide. Many highway rollovers, including those caused by a side-impact collision, fall into this category rather than happening on flat, open pavement.
What to Do After a Rollover Crash in Salt Lake City, Utah
If you're involved in a rollover, stay as still as possible until you can check for injuries, especially neck or back pain, before trying to move. Turn on hazard lights if the vehicle is still drivable and safe to reach, and get away from traffic lanes if you're able to exit safely. Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since adrenaline can mask pain from impacts or being jostled inside the vehicle. Seek a medical evaluation the same day, because some injuries from a rollover, like internal bleeding or concussions, don't show obvious symptoms right away. Get the names and badge numbers of responding officers and ask how to obtain the official crash report once it's filed, since Salt Lake City traffic investigations can take time to complete.
