Frequently Asked Questions
What should a rider do immediately after a motorcycle crash?
If possible, move to a safe location out of traffic, call 911, and avoid removing protective gear or a helmet unless necessary, since doing so can worsen some injuries. Get checked by medical personnel even if injuries seem minor, as some, like internal injuries, aren't obvious right away.
Do motorcycle crashes happen more frequently near on-ramps and off-ramps?
Merging areas and off-ramps can create sudden speed changes and lane shifts that catch riders off guard, so extra caution in those zones is generally recommended for both motorcyclists and drivers.
Can road surface conditions affect a motorcycle's stability?
Yes. Uneven pavement, debris, or wet roads reduce a motorcycle's traction more than they do a car's, since a bike relies on a smaller contact patch with the road to stay upright.
What gear helps reduce injury severity for motorcyclists?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots are commonly cited as reducing the severity of injuries in a crash.
