Volusia County, FL (July 1, 2026) – A driver accused of fleeing after striking a fire truck was taken into custody following a pursuit along International Speedway Boulevard in Volusia County.

The sequence began around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, while emergency units were assisting at a separate rollover involving a 44-year-old Miami man on International Speedway Boulevard south of Indian Lake Road. Investigators said a 27-year-old DeLand man driving a 2020 Honda Civic failed to stop at a roadblock, hit Fire Truck 15, and continued east on the roadway.

Witnesses reported seeing the Honda traveling at a high rate of speed with law enforcement vehicles following behind. The pursuit ended at the intersection of International Speedway Boulevard and Amelia Avenue in DeLand after the Civic left the road and struck a utility pole, separating the engine from the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Jamal Anthony Riascos, reportedly tried to flee on foot before being caught. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to face charges including leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, reckless driving, resisting without violence, and violation of probation. Investigators also said Riascos briefly stopped during the pursuit to let out two passengers, and at least one passenger was arrested. Emergency personnel were evaluated for injuries and treated on site.

The circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run remain under review as investigators continue gathering evidence.

We hope everyone affected by this chain of events remains safe and recovers fully.

Why Drivers Must Stop for Emergency Roadblocks

Temporary roadblocks are commonly set up after serious roadway emergencies to protect both the public and workers in the area. These traffic controls may be used while vehicles are removed, injured people receive medical attention, or hazardous conditions are cleared.

Drivers approaching a roadblock should slow down immediately, follow posted directions, and obey traffic control instructions. Ignoring these measures can place others at risk and may lead to additional collisions, property damage, or criminal charges. Even when delays are frustrating, road closures are intended to reduce danger and allow emergency work to proceed safely. Remaining alert, reducing speed, and leaving extra following distance can help prevent secondary crashes in areas where traffic patterns suddenly change.
