Fort Lauderdale, FL (June 26, 2026) – A hit-and-run driver fatally struck a bicyclist early on Thursday morning along Southeast 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale. The fatal collision happened at about 6:40 a.m. in the 2000 block of the roadway.
The cyclist was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where she later died. She was identified as 68-year-old Shelley Lewis of Fort Lauderdale.
Investigators said 22-year-old Don Janea Smith has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Eastbound lanes of Southeast 17th St remained closed while crews examined the roadway, and motorists were encouraged to use alternate routes.
