St. Petersburg, FL (June 26, 2026) – One person lost their life early on Thursday, June 25, after a pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a van on 5th Avenue N near Lafayette Street N in St. Petersburg. The fatal impact happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the city’s United Central neighborhood.

Investigators said the pickup was traveling eastbound when it entered the westbound lanes and hit the approaching van. The pickup driver, 72-year-old Charles Caravana, was pronounced dead at the scene after next of kin had been notified.

The van’s driver, a 67-year-old woman, was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital. She was reported to be in stable condition. No additional information about the collision was available at the time of publication.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Charles Caravana during this difficult time.

What Is Reviewed After a Head-on Crash?

Head-on crashes result in extensive reviews because they can involve serious injuries or fatalities. Early reports generally focus on the roadway, the vehicles involved, and the basic sequence of events leading up to the vehicles’ collision. Additional details are frequently released only after investigators complete a thorough examination.

Physical evidence from the roadway may include tire marks, debris patterns, and the resting positions of the vehicles. These findings can help determine how a vehicle entered an opposing lane and whether outside factors contributed. Medical information and vehicle damage may also provide a clearer picture as more facts become available, allowing for a more complete understanding of how the collision occurred.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
