What Typically Happens When a Wrong-Way Vehicle Is Involved in a Freeway Hit-and-Run
A wrong-way vehicle on a freeway creates an especially dangerous set of circumstances. Drivers traveling in the correct direction often have very little time to react, and the closing speed between two vehicles moving toward each other can be extreme. When that vehicle also flees the scene, it adds another layer of complexity to what emergency units and investigators must manage.
Freeway hit-and-run cases involving multiple vehicles typically require investigators to reconstruct the sequence of contact between each car. Surveillance footage from nearby ramps and surface streets, along with the position of vehicles left on the roadway, helps establish what happened and in what order. Locating a suspect vehicle that exited the freeway can sometimes move quickly if cameras captured a clear image of the license plate.
