What Typically Happens After a Fatal Head-On Crash on a Rural California Road
Head-on crashes on rural two-lane roads tend to be among the most deadly type of vehicle accident. Without a dividing barrier between opposing lanes of traffic, there is little to absorb or redirect the force when two vehicles meet front-to-front. The outcome is often severe, even at relatively moderate speeds.
After a fatal head-on crash, investigators typically focus on lane position, speed, and whether any factor, such as fatigue, distraction, or a medical event, caused one vehicle to drift into oncoming traffic. Road geometry and sight distance are also examined, particularly on winding mountain roads where visibility can be limited. In California, fatal crash investigations may involve reconstructionists who use physical evidence and vehicle data to build a precise picture of how the collision unfolded.
