Southwest Miami-Dade, FL (August 4, 2026) – A 74-year-old woman was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle outside her home in southwest Miami-Dade early on Sunday morning, August 2. The collision happened just before 2:30 a.m. in the 15360 block of SW 295th Street.
Investigators said the woman, later identified by her family as Geraldine Byrd, had returned home from the Miccosukee Casino, parked her vehicle, and was opening the front gate to her property when she was struck just a short distance from her entrance. She became trapped beneath the vehicle and was airlifted to Jackson South Medical, where she remained in critical but stable condition, according to her family.
Authorities said the driver fled the scene on foot after the crash. A witness followed the suspect to a nearby shed and alerted deputies, who took 31-year-old Tomas Raymundo Brito into custody. According to investigators, Brito admitted he had been driving and told deputies he had consumed about five beers before the collision. He now faces charges that include leaving the scene of a crash, causing serious bodily injury.
The victim’s family said her parked vehicle was also damaged during the incident. Neighbors described Byrd as a caring member of the community and said they hope to see additional safety improvements in the area, including better lighting and more visible stop signs. The investigation remains active as officials continue gathering evidence.
