East Palo Alto, CA (August 21, 2026) — A motorcyclist died in a hit-and-run wreck early on Thursday morning, August 20, 2026, on southbound Highway 101 near University Avenue in East Palo Alto, according to investigators. It happened around 6:05 a.m.

Investigators said the rider was in the fourth lane from the left when a vehicle struck the motorcycle and left the scene. The rider was found in the transition lane from University Avenue to southbound 101.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the rider as 38-year-old Irma Elizabeth Oxlaj Vargas of Redwood City. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two lanes of the highway were blocked and reopened by around 9:10 a.m. The investigation led officers to a Sunnyvale neighborhood, where a dark, older-model Acura sedan was towed as part of the case.

An 18-year-old suspect was later arrested about 200 miles away in the Central Valley, according to investigators. The investigation remains ongoing.

Our thoughts are with Vargas’s family during this difficult time.

Why Lane Position Matters for Motorcyclists on Multi-Lane Highways

On a highway with several lanes running in the same direction, where a motorcyclist chooses to ride can significantly affect how visible they are to surrounding traffic. A middle lane puts a rider in the blind spots of vehicles on both sides at once, while the leftmost or rightmost lane usually leaves only one side to worry about.

Lane position also affects how much room a rider has to react if traffic patterns shift unexpectedly. Being boxed in by vehicles on both sides limits where a motorcyclist can go if something suddenly changes ahead, while riding closer to an outer lane generally leaves more open space to move into if needed.

Riders are encouraged to actively choose their lane position rather than settling into whichever lane they merged into and staying there. Adjusting position based on which vehicles are nearby, where blind spots are forming, and how much escape room exists in each direction can meaningfully improve how visible and reactive a rider is throughout a longer highway ride.
