Kern County, CA (August 21, 2026) – At least one person was killed on Thursday afternoon, August 20, in a collision on westbound Highway 58 near Fairfax Road in Bakersfield. It happened around 11:33 a.m., according to authorities. That stretch of Highway 58 is a busy commuter route on the east side of the city.

A large trash can was reported in the roadway and may have contributed to the wreck, authorities said. It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were involved or how the trash can ended up in the travel lanes. Injuries to others involved were not immediately known. The cause remains under investigation.

Our condolences go out to the family of the person who died.

Why Is Road Debris So Dangerous at Highway Speeds?

Road debris is a more common contributing factor in serious highway incidents than many drivers realize, since even a relatively small object can force a sudden swerve at highway speed. A large item like a trash can, if struck directly or if a driver reacts suddenly to avoid it, can lead to a loss of control before there’s time to react safely.

Debris can end up on a roadway for several reasons, including falling from an unsecured truck bed, being blown by wind, or coming loose from a nearby property during collection day. Once an object is in a travel lane, following drivers have only a second or two to decide whether to swerve, brake, or attempt to drive over it.

Highway departments generally ask drivers who spot debris in the road to report it when it’s safe to do so, since prompt removal can prevent a hazard from causing a more serious incident. Slowing down and increasing following distance in areas prone to debris, like busy commuter routes, can also give drivers more time to react.
