Why Head-on Crashes Often Lead to Serious Outcomes
Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of roadway accidents. These collisions occur when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions strike each other head-on, often at combined speeds that greatly increase the impact force.
Such crashes frequently happen on two-lane roads where traffic flows in both directions without a physical divider. Driver fatigue, distraction, impaired driving, or attempting to pass another vehicle can sometimes lead to a car crossing into oncoming traffic.
Roadway conditions can also contribute to these accidents. Wet pavement, reduced visibility, or narrow lanes may make it harder for drivers to maintain proper lane position.
Because the front of a vehicle absorbs most of the impact force, occupants closest to the point of impact often face the greatest risk of serious injury.
