Holt Co, MO (January 1, 2026) – A complex crash involving two large commercial vehicles on Interstate 29 early Wednesday morning resulted in one driver being hospitalized and extensive damage to both trucks. The incident occurred on December 31, at approximately 1:06 a.m., in the northbound lanes near the 83.6 mile marker, roughly half a mile south of Mound City.
According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash began when a 2001 conventional truck experienced a critical equipment failure. The vehicle, operated by a 46-year-old man from Schulter, Oklahoma, was traveling north when the failure caused its towed unit to strike an emergency crossover. The impact led to the unit detaching and overturning in the median. Following this, the truck itself veered off the east side of the road.
At the same time, a 2022 Volvo semi, driven by a 64-year-old man from Omaha, Nebraska, attempted to avoid the disabled truck. In the process, the second vehicle also left the roadway and collided with the first truck. The Volvo overturned onto its driver’s side and came to a rest facing east, while the first vehicle came to rest on its wheels, facing southwest, off the roadway.
The driver of the Volvo suffered moderate injuries in the collision. Paramedics with Holt Atchison EMS provided on-scene care before transporting the man to Mosaic Life Care in Saint Joseph. The other driver was not reported injured. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were removed from the scene by Benefiel’s towing service.
Authorities from MSHP Troop H, along with local emergency crews, responded to assist with the crash scene and conduct an investigation. Traffic was likely impacted during the overnight cleanup and recovery efforts.
