What Risks Are Associated With Vehicles Leaving the Roadway?
Crashes involving vehicles that leave the roadway can pose dangers not only to drivers and passengers but also to people inside nearby homes and buildings. When a vehicle travels beyond the edge of a road, fences, landscaping, and even structures may provide little protection against the force of a moving vehicle.
Many roadway departure collisions occur near intersections, curves, or areas where drivers fail to recognize traffic controls. Factors such as distraction, impairment, fatigue, medical emergencies, or excessive speed can cause a vehicle to leave its intended path.
When a vehicle strikes a building, investigators often review roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and the surrounding environment to determine how the sequence unfolded. Structural inspections may also be conducted to assess damage and identify any safety concerns for occupants. These reviews help provide a clearer understanding of the factors that contributed to the collision and its resulting damage.
