Why Visibility Is a Major Factor in Nighttime Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrian collisions that occur after dark often present unique challenges because drivers and walkers may have difficulty seeing one another. Reduced lighting can limit reaction time and make it harder to recognize hazards along busy roadways.
Clothing color, roadway lighting, weather conditions, and vehicle speed can all affect visibility at night. Pedestrians who cross or travel near roadways after sunset may be more difficult for drivers to detect, particularly in areas with heavy traffic or limited illumination.
Investigators examining nighttime pedestrian crashes frequently consider sight distance, lighting conditions, vehicle movements, and witness accounts. They may also review surveillance footage and physical evidence from the roadway. These factors can help clarify how a collision occurred and whether environmental conditions contributed to the outcome.
