Honolulu, HI (February 25, 2026) – An 82-year-old woman was critically hurt Tuesday morning, February 24, after becoming trapped beneath an SUV near Maryknoll Grade School. The crash happened around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Dole Street and Alexander Street.
Police said a 59-year-old man was driving westbound on Dole Street with a male passenger when he turned left onto Alexander Street. As he made the turn, the SUV struck the woman while she was crossing in a marked crosswalk. The vehicle stopped in the roadway after the impact.
Emergency units arrived shortly after 10:15 a.m. Firefighters used pneumatic lifting equipment to raise the SUV and free the woman from underneath. Paramedics treated her at the scene and took her to a hospital in critical condition.
The driver and his passenger were not hurt and remained at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation. We extend our thoughts to the woman and hope for her recovery.
What Risks Do Pedestrians Face at Marked Crosswalks?
Marked crosswalks are designed to help people cross streets safely, but risks can still exist. Drivers turning at intersections may focus on traffic gaps and fail to see someone already in the crosswalk. Larger vehicles, such as SUVs, can also create blind spots that make it harder to notice a person walking nearby.
Morning hours near schools often bring a mix of vehicles and foot traffic. When drivers turn left, they must watch for both oncoming cars and pedestrians crossing their path. Even at lower speeds, a person on foot has little protection in a crash.
In many cases, visibility, driver attention, and timing all affect how these incidents unfold. Crosswalk markings improve awareness, but both drivers and pedestrians must remain alert at intersections.
