Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid hitting a pedestrian, especially in low light?
Slowing down near freeway service roads and intersections, scanning the roadway edges, and staying off phones can help drivers spot people on foot sooner, particularly in early morning or nighttime conditions when visibility is low.
What injuries do pedestrians typically suffer when struck by a vehicle?
Pedestrian crashes often cause head trauma, broken bones, spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since a person on foot has no protection against a vehicle's impact.
What usually causes pedestrian crashes like this one?
Common factors include driver distraction, speeding, poor lighting, and pedestrians crossing outside of marked crosswalks, though the specific cause of any crash is determined by investigators.
Does vehicle speed change a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Yes. Research generally shows that the faster a vehicle is traveling at impact, the lower a pedestrian's odds of survival, which is part of why speed limits near roadways with foot traffic matter.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Houston, TX
Anyone who witnesses a pedestrian struck by a vehicle should call 911 immediately and avoid moving the injured person unless there's an immediate danger. If you're a pedestrian involved in a crash and able to do so, seek medical evaluation right away, even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries like internal bleeding or concussions aren't obvious at first. Try to note details about the vehicle, including color, make, direction of travel, and any part of the license plate, since that information can help investigators, especially in hit-and-run cases. Cooperate with police when they arrive and request a copy of the official report once it's available. If you saw what happened, let officers know, since witness accounts and nearby surveillance footage are often key to identifying drivers who leave the scene.
