Frequently Asked Questions
What steps can drivers take to lower their chances of a crash?
Staying focused, keeping a safe following distance, and adjusting speed for traffic and road conditions are among the most reliable ways to avoid a collision.
What injuries commonly result from car accidents?
Whiplash, cuts and bruises, and broken bones are common in freeway collisions, though injury severity varies widely depending on speed and impact angle.
What typically causes crashes like this one?
Distraction, following too closely, and sudden lane changes are frequent factors in multi-vehicle freeway crashes, though a specific cause here has not been confirmed.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which generally means more serious injuries and vehicle damage.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Livermore, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a freeway like I-580, try to move to the shoulder if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Turn on hazard lights and stay inside the vehicle when possible, since standing near active traffic lanes is dangerous. Call 911 to report injuries and request help. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away. Exchange information with the other driver and take photos of the scene if you're able. Keep a copy of the CHP incident report for your records once it becomes available.
