Houston, TX (January 3, 2026) – A tragic collision involving an 18-wheeler and a CenterPoint Energy utility truck resulted in the death of one man on Friday morning on the westbound lanes of the 610 South Loop near Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to the Houston Police Department.
The deadly crash was reported around 9:30 a.m., prompting a large-scale emergency response from Houston Police and Fire crews. First responders arrived to find the CenterPoint Energy truck overturned and pinned against a light pole, while the front end of the 18-wheeler was visibly damaged.
Sgt. Alejandro with the Houston Police Department reported that the CenterPoint utility truck had attempted to merge unsafely when it collided with the front of the 18-wheeler. The impact caused the semi-truck to lose control, dragging the utility vehicle before both vehicles came to a stop.
Houston Fire Department crews worked urgently to free two trapped occupants from the utility truck. The driver was extricated first and reportedly sustained no serious injuries. However, the passenger remained pinned for nearly two hours. Once rescued, he was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died as a result of the crash.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved. The investigation remains active as police review roadway conditions, dashcam footage, and statements from both drivers and witnesses to determine any contributing factors or possible violations.
