Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes a police pursuit to end in a crash?
Pursuits often end abruptly when officers use tactics such as a PIT maneuver to disable a vehicle, or when the fleeing driver loses control. Speed, impairment, and the driver's decision-making all factor into how a chase ends.
How does speed affect the severity of a crash like this?
Higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase the force of any impact, so crashes during pursuits tend to cause more serious injury than routine traffic collisions.
Can drug or alcohol impairment affect how a crash unfolds?
Yes. Impairment can slow reaction times and affect a driver's judgment, and it can also complicate how occupants respond medically after a crash, which is why emergency crews evaluate everyone involved.
