Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents like this one?
Many pedestrian crashes happen in parking lots and apartment complexes where drivers have limited visibility, especially around parked cars, and where young children can be hard to see.
How does a vehicle's speed affect the outcome for a pedestrian?
Even low speed impacts can seriously injure a small child. Slower speeds generally give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of any impact.
Do pedestrian accidents happen more at night?
Reduced visibility after dark raises the risk, but many pedestrian crashes, including ones involving children, happen during daylight hours in residential areas and parking lots.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Houston, TX
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 right away and avoid moving an injured person unless there is immediate danger. Even if a child or adult seems only shaken up, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries aren't obvious right away. Stay at the scene until authorities arrive, share what you saw with responding deputies, and if possible, note details like where vehicles and the pedestrian were positioned. For families living in apartment communities, it's worth asking property management about speed bumps, signage, or lighting in shared parking areas where young children may be present.
