Howell, NJ (January 26, 2026) – A 72-year-old man was seriously injured after a fire pit accident at a home on Second Street in Howell on January 24. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene just after 11:20 a.m.
According to Howell Police, the man was attempting to ignite a fire pit using a liquid accelerant when a sudden gust of wind caused the flames to blow back onto him. He sustained moderate burns to his face as a result of the flash fire.
Paramedics and EMTs treated the man at the scene before he was airlifted by medical helicopter to the burn unit at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for specialized care.
Firefighters from the Southard and Freewood Acres fire departments responded alongside Howell EMS and police. The Howell Fire Bureau also conducted an investigation and determined the incident was accidental.
