Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes crashes involving large trucks?
Truck crashes often stem from a mix of factors such as driver fatigue, mechanical failure, improper loading, or sudden braking. Investigators typically examine all of these before determining a cause.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force involved in a collision, which often leads to more serious injuries and vehicle damage.
How do road and weather conditions play into crashes like this?
Wet pavement, debris, or uneven road surfaces can affect a truck's stability, especially when it's carrying a full load. Even small changes in traction can contribute to a rollover.
Why is distracted driving considered so risky?
Taking attention off the road, even briefly, reduces a driver's ability to respond to sudden hazards like slowed traffic or lane blockages, which can turn a minor issue into a major crash.
What to Do After a Tractor-Trailer Crash in Toano, VA
If you're involved in or come across a crash involving a large truck, keep a safe distance from any leaking fuel or unstable cargo, and never try to move heavy debris yourself. Call 911 right away and wait for emergency crews and VDOT to secure the scene. If you experience any pain or stiffness afterward, even if it seems minor, seek a medical evaluation promptly, since some injuries aren't apparent right away. Keep records of any medical visits and, if safe to do so, take photos of the scene for your own documentation. Follow posted detours and updates from VDOT, since highway reopening times can shift as cleanup continues.
