Frequently Asked Questions
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families are generally advised to contact the investigating agency, in this case the CHP, for official updates and the formal report once it's completed. It also helps to keep records of any communication with hospitals, coroner's offices, or insurance companies early on.
How are fatal crashes investigated?
Investigators typically examine the scene, vehicle damage, witness statements, and any available video or data recorders to reconstruct how the collision occurred. Multi-vehicle crashes like this one often take longer because investigators have to establish the sequence in which each vehicle was struck.
How long do fatal-crash investigations take?
Timelines vary widely. Initial findings, such as whether impairment was involved, can be available within days, but a full report with a determined cause may take weeks or longer, depending on the complexity of the crash.
What role does impairment play in fatal crashes?
Alcohol and drug impairment are common factors investigators check for early in any fatal crash review. In this case, the CHP said it does not believe impairment was involved, though the broader investigation continues.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Fresno, CA
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, try to stay where it's safe and call 911 so medical help and law enforcement can reach everyone involved. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries from a collision don't show symptoms right away.
Write down what you remember as soon as you can: where each vehicle was headed, what you saw, and who else stopped to help. If officers respond, as the CHP did here, ask how to request a copy of the crash report once it's finalized. For anyone who lost someone or was hospitalized, Fresno has local victim support and hospital resources that can help with the practical steps that follow a serious crash.
