What Happens When Impairment Is Suspected After a Traffic Crash?
When impairment is suspected after a traffic accident, a driver may undergo a medical evaluation before further action is taken. Medical staff may first address any injuries or other health concerns. This process can help ensure the person is medically stable before additional testing or procedures occur.
Investigators may examine several types of information when impairment is suspected. These can include observations of driving behavior, statements from witnesses, vehicle positions, and available video. Results from approved testing may also become part of the information reviewed.
A vehicle rollover can add another factor to the review. Investigators may examine vehicle damage, roadway conditions, tire marks, and other physical evidence to understand how the wreck unfolded. These details can help establish the sequence of movements before and during the collision.
