Independence, MO (May 17, 2026) – Four people were injured, including two critically, after a police pursuit ended in a rollover crash Saturday afternoon in Independence.

Emergency units responded shortly before 4:45 p.m. on Saturday to the intersection of Lee’s Summit Road and Truman Road after reports of a serious collision. Investigators said officers had been pursuing a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe northbound on Lee’s Summit Road when the driver crossed into southbound lanes and entered the intersection.

The Tahoe then collided with a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander traveling eastbound on Truman Road. The impact caused the Mitsubishi to overturn, injuring all four people inside the SUV.

Officials confirmed that two passengers suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Tahoe reportedly fled the scene on foot but was later arrested nearby. A passenger in the Tahoe was taken into custody at the crash site.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.

Rollover Crashes During Pursuits Can Cause Serious Injuries

Rollover crashes involving multiple vehicles often lead to severe injuries because occupants can be thrown violently inside the vehicle during impact. SUVs may be especially vulnerable to overturning when struck from the side or during sudden directional changes at intersections.

Intersections like Lee’s Summit Road and Truman Road can become dangerous during high-speed situations because cross traffic may have little warning before another vehicle enters the roadway unexpectedly. Collisions during pursuits can also involve greater force due to vehicle speed and evasive movement.

After a rollover crash, emergency crews often need extra time to assist injured occupants, stabilize overturned vehicles, and secure the area. Investigators typically review vehicle paths, impact points, and roadway evidence to better understand how the crash unfolded.
