Gloucester County, VA (May 26, 2026) – Multiple people were injured following a two-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer on George Washington Memorial Highway, according to Virginia State Police. The collision occurred at the intersection of Route 33 and Route 198 on Monday afternoon, May 25.
Troopers said a northbound tractor-trailer ran a red light and struck a 2011 Lincoln Navigator carrying multiple passengers. After the impact, the tractor-trailer left the roadway, hit several utility poles, and then struck multiple boats at a nearby dealership.
Officials said the occupants of the Navigator were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. All were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The truck driver was not injured and was issued a citation for failure to obey a highway sign.
No further details about the passengers’ identities were released. The investigation into the multi-vehicle crash remains ongoing. We are thinking of those affected and wish them well in recovery.
Why Red-Light Violations Can Lead to High-Impact Highway Crashes
Intersections that connect major highways often carry fast-moving traffic, which can make red-light violations especially dangerous. When a large commercial truck enters an intersection against a signal, the size and weight difference can significantly increase the severity of any resulting collision.
After the initial impact, vehicles may continue into nearby infrastructure or parked property, leading to additional damage beyond the roadway. Investigators typically review signal timing, driver actions, and roadway markings to understand how the violation occurred and how the sequence of events unfolded. These findings help clarify how multi-vehicle crashes develop at high-speed intersections.
