What Can Lead to Rollover Crashes on Highways?
Rollover crashes can happen for several reasons, especially on high-speed highways. A vehicle may overturn after striking another vehicle, leaving the pavement, or making a sudden steering correction to avoid an obstacle. Sport utility vehicles and other taller vehicles generally have a higher center of gravity, which can increase the likelihood of rolling over under certain circumstances.
Road conditions, traffic flow, and debris can also contribute to these types of crashes. After a rollover, cleanup often takes longer because overturned vehicles and scattered debris may block multiple lanes. As more information becomes available, investigators typically review vehicle positions, roadway evidence, and witness statements to better determine the sequence of events.
