Lafayette, IN (May 25, 2026) – A traffic disruption unfolded Monday night, May 24, on northbound I-65 near mile marker 159 after two passenger vehicles and a semi-truck became involved in a multi-vehicle pileup.
One of the passenger vehicles reportedly continued traveling after the initial involvement and was later discovered near mile marker 162, where smoke was visible coming from it. The other involved vehicles remained along the northbound stretch while travel slowed in the surrounding lanes.
Emergency units arrived to manage the situation and check on those involved. At least one person was taken to the hospital following the highway pileup. The vehicle that left the original stretch was later found showing signs of smoke near the second mile marker.
The inquiry into what led up to the multi-vehicle pileup remains ongoing.
Thoughts are with those affected as recovery continues.
What Happens During Multi-Vehicle Highway Pileups?
Highway pileups may involve several vehicles becoming tangled within a short stretch of road. These situations can develop quickly when traffic slows suddenly or when drivers have limited space to react. High speeds on interstates increase the chance that a chain reaction may form, especially during busy travel periods or reduced visibility.
After the initial disruption, vehicles may be moved or may travel away from the original point before stopping again due to mechanical issues or damage. Mile markers help describe where each part of the roadway activity took place. Smoke from a vehicle can indicate engine strain, leaking fluids, or overheating after a stressful drive. Traffic flow may remain affected while vehicles are assessed and cleared from travel lanes.
