Why Medical Helicopters May Be Requested After Pedestrian Accidents
Medical helicopters are sometimes requested after serious pedestrian accidents when quick access to advanced trauma care may be needed. These aircraft are often considered when injuries appear severe or when ground travel could take longer because of traffic or distance. Weather conditions, visibility, and landing space can also affect whether a flight actually takes place.
In some cases, a helicopter is canceled after emergency teams evaluate the person involved more closely. A patient may instead be treated and moved by ambulance if crews determine air transport is unnecessary. Road conditions, witness accounts, and the position of the vehicle are often reviewed after pedestrian impacts. Early information can change as more details are gathered from those at the roadway and nearby surveillance sources.
