Avilla, MO (July 23, 2026) – A two-vehicle collision on Tuesday, July 21, left one passenger with moderate injuries along MO-96 east of Avilla in Jasper County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck happened at about 11:45 a.m. on MO-96 about 0.4 miles east of County Road 20. Investigators said a 2022 Dodge Ram slowed while preparing to turn into a residential driveway when it was struck from behind by a 2012 GMC Terrain traveling in the same direction.

The Dodge Ram, driven by a 25-year-old man from Lamar, received minor damage and was driven away from the roadway. The GMC Terrain, operated by a 61-year-old woman from Joplin, sustained extensive damage and was towed from the site.

A 94-year-old male passenger riding in the GMC was hurt and taken to Mercy Hospital Joplin by emergency units for treatment. No additional injuries were listed in the initial report. The cause of the collision remains under review as investigators continue gathering information.

We hope the person injured makes a full and speedy recovery.

Why Rear-End Collisions Usually Occur During Turning Maneuvers

Rear-end crashes frequently happen when one vehicle slows or stops to make a turn, and the following driver is unable to reduce speed in time. Safe following distance is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of these collisions, giving drivers enough time to react to changing traffic conditions. Factors such as distraction, limited visibility, excessive speed, or misjudging another vehicle’s movements can all contribute to this type of roadway crash.

Even at moderate speeds, occupants may experience significant injuries, particularly older adults who are more vulnerable to trauma. Examining vehicle damage, road conditions, witness statements, and other physical evidence can help determine how a rear-end collision unfolded and provide a clearer picture of the sequence of actions leading up to the impact.
