INKSTER, Wayne County, Mich., Oct. 9, 2026 — A 12-year-old girl and an adult man were hospitalized after a vehicle struck them early on Thursday morning, October 8, at Inkster Road and Avondale Street in Inkster, Michigan. The girl was listed in serious but stable condition, while the man was reported in critical condition.
Police shut down part of the intersection during the morning rush hour as they worked the scene, according to local reports. Officers remained on site investigating while traffic was diverted around the area during the commute.
It is not yet known whether the victims were in a crosswalk at the time they were struck, and no information about vehicle speed or lighting conditions has been released. Investigators have not said whether any citations or charges are expected.
This is at least the second pedestrian crash reported along the broader Inkster Road corridor this year. Hoodline previously reported that an 11-year-old boy was struck and killed in February while walking along Inkster Road near Eureka Road in neighboring Taylor.
We offer our deepest sympathy to the families of the victims.
When Pedestrian Crashes Spike Along Michigan Roads
Pedestrian crashes do not happen evenly across the clock or the calendar. State figures show that more than 96 percent of Michigan pedestrian deaths occur in the dark, at dawn, or at dusk, and October logs the highest monthly count of pedestrian-involved crashes statewide. As daylight hours shorten in the fall, more commuters are walking or driving during low-light windows that used to be fully lit.
Early morning hours carry their own mix of risks. Drivers may still be adjusting to the day, visibility is reduced at intersections without strong overhead lighting, and pedestrians crossing during the school or work commute can be harder to see against headlights and shadows. Traffic volume also increases quickly during the morning rush, narrowing the time a driver has to react.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Many of these cluster at predictable times of day, which is part of why cities increasingly look at lighting, signal timing, and crosswalk visibility as tools to bring the numbers down.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most traffic accidents happen?
A large share occurs at or near intersections, particularly where visibility is limited, signals are absent, or crosswalks are not clearly marked.
How can drivers reduce their crash risk?
Slowing down near intersections, scanning for pedestrians before turning, and avoiding distractions all help drivers react in time, especially in low light.
What injuries are most common in car accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries, with severity closely tied to vehicle speed at impact.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Inkster, MI
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately so that injured people can receive medical attention as quickly as possible. Even injuries that seem minor at first, like a limp or soreness, should be checked by a doctor, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away.
Try to stay at the scene until officers arrive, and, if it's safe to do so, note details such as where the vehicle was traveling and whether any traffic signals were involved. Photos of the scene, weather, and lighting conditions can help investigators later. Family members of anyone hospitalized should keep records of medical visits and follow up with the police for updates on the investigation.
