NORTH DINWIDDIE, Dinwiddie County, Va., Oct. 9, 2026 — A truck driver faces multiple charges after his vehicle crashed into a Burger King restaurant late on Wednesday night, October 7, injuring two people, Virginia State Police said.
The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. at the Burger King on Boydton Plank Road, according to state police. A 2001 International truck reportedly struck the restaurant's dining area.
Investigators said a preliminary review indicates the driver was trying to park when he hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending the truck into the building.
Two people were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described by police as non-life-threatening. Their names and conditions have not been released.
The driver, identified by state police as Franklin Scott Traylor of Petersburg, was charged with driving a commercial motor vehicle under the influence, operating without a commercial driver's license, and failing to provide proof of insurance at the scene. The case remains under investigation.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.
Where Truck Crashes Into Buildings Tend to Happen
Crashes in which a truck ends up inside a building are not limited to highways. Many happen in parking lots, loading areas, and drive-through lanes, places where trucks move at low speed but in tight quarters next to storefronts and dining areas. A pedal mix-up or a stuck throttle in that setting can send a heavy vehicle through a wall before anyone has time to react.
Restaurants and retail stores near busy roads are common sites for this kind of crash because they sit close to parking and turning areas used by delivery trucks and other large vehicles. Low curbs, thin storefront glass, and dining areas placed near parking spaces offer little to prevent a vehicle from suddenly accelerating toward the building.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality occurred every 42 minutes on average in 2023. Impairment can slow the reaction time needed to catch a pedal error before it turns into a crash, a factor investigators often examine in cases like this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do after a crash involving a commercial truck?
Call 911, seek medical care even for minor injuries, and get the names of any witnesses. A police report will document the vehicles involved and any citations issued.
Why do trucks need so much room to stop or maneuver?
Commercial trucks are heavier and longer than passenger vehicles, so they take more distance and space to slow down, turn, or park safely. In tight areas like parking lots, that margin shrinks fast.
What makes truck crashes more dangerous than typical car crashes?
The size and weight difference between a truck and a building, vehicle, or pedestrian means more force is transferred in a collision, often leading to more serious damage and injury than a crash between two passenger cars.
What are a truck's blind spots and why do they matter?
Large trucks have wide blind spots along both sides, behind the cab, and directly in front of the vehicle. Drivers and pedestrians near a parked or maneuvering truck should stay visible to the driver whenever possible.
What to Do After a Truck Crash in North Dinwiddie, Virginia
If you're nearby when a truck crash happens, move to a safe distance and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since shock can mask pain or symptoms that show up later.
If you were inside a building or vehicle that was struck, keep any paperwork from the scene, including police contact information and the report number, and follow up with your own doctor in the days after. Dinwiddie County authorities and state troopers typically make an official report available once the investigation is further along, which can be useful for insurance or medical follow-up.
