Jefferson County, CO (April 28, 2026) – One person was killed, and two others were injured following a single-vehicle crash on C-470 near Ken Caryl Ave.
The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on April 28 along the westbound lanes near mile marker 10. Emergency units responded after reports of a vehicle leaving the roadway on a bridge over Ken Caryl Ave.
Investigators said a red Toyota SUV drifted left, went off the road, and entered the median before striking a guardrail. The vehicle continued through the median and came to rest without blocking traffic lanes.
Three people inside the SUV were taken to a hospital. The driver, a 31-year-old man, later died from his injuries. A 30-year-old woman suffered serious injuries, while a 3-year-old child sustained minor injuries. All occupants are believed to be from New Mexico.
Westbound lanes were closed for about two hours as crews worked at the scene, causing traffic delays. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
What Can Cause a Vehicle to Drift Off the Road on Highways?
Vehicles may drift out of their lane for several reasons, including driver distraction or fatigue. Even a brief loss of focus can cause a vehicle to move out of position, especially at highway speeds.
Road design and conditions can also affect vehicle control. Curves, bridges, and changes in elevation may require drivers to pay closer attention to stay within their lane.
When a vehicle leaves the roadway, fixed objects such as guardrails can limit its further movement but may also cause serious damage. These impacts can increase the risk of injury, especially at higher speeds.
