Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Higher speeds, a lack of protective equipment such as helmets or seat belts, and turning or crossing movements at intersections all raise the chance that a crash will be deadly rather than survivable.
How does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Even modest increases in speed raise the force of impact and reduce the time a driver has to react or stop, which tends to make injuries more severe.
Why does protective gear like a helmet matter so much?
Helmets and seat belts are designed to reduce head and body trauma in a collision. Riders and drivers without them face a much higher risk of serious or fatal injury in the same crash.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families typically start by requesting the official police report, contacting the medical examiner's office for information, and reaching out to the investigating agency with any questions as the case moves forward.
