Frequently Asked Questions
How are fatal crashes like this one investigated?
In Texas, a lead agency such as the Department of Public Safety typically reconstructs the scene, reviews vehicle positions and physical evidence, and interviews any surviving occupants or witnesses to determine how the crash occurred.
How long does a fatal-crash investigation usually take?
Initial findings can emerge within days, but full crash reports, especially those involving reconstruction, usually take several weeks to a few months to complete.
Does impairment usually play a role in head-on crashes?
It can, but a specific cause such as alcohol, drugs, or driver error is only confirmed once investigators release findings. It should not be assumed before an agency states it.
Where do fatal head-on crashes most frequently happen?
They are common on undivided two-lane highways where oncoming traffic is separated only by a painted center line rather than a physical barrier.
