Kansas City, KS (February 24, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 435 left two women injured Tuesday morning, February 24, in Wyandotte County. The accident happened at about 7:48 a.m. in the southbound lanes near milepost 10, just north of K-32 Hwy.
According to the crash report, a 2007 Toyota Highlander was traveling southbound when traffic ahead began slowing and coming to a stop. The Toyota then rear-ended a 2024 BMW that was already stopped with traffic. Both vehicles were damaged and later removed from the scene by tow services.
The driver of the Toyota, 58-year-old Cynthia A. Van Eyck of Kansas City, Missouri, reported pain and was listed with a possible injury. The driver of the BMW, 46-year-old Leslie A. Bender of Belton, Missouri, was taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital with suspected minor injuries. The incident remains under review by authorities. We are thinking of those injured as they recover.
Why Do Rear-End Crashes Frequently Happen in Heavy Traffic?
Rear-end accidents often occur when traffic slows suddenly on busy highways. Drivers may not have enough time to react if they are following too closely or are distracted. Even a brief delay in braking can lead to a collision.
High-speed corridors like I-435 can create added risk when vehicles transition from freeway speeds to stop-and-go traffic. The difference in speed between moving and stopped vehicles increases the force of impact. Morning travel periods often see heavier volumes, which can make sudden stops more common.
Maintaining a safe following distance and staying alert to changing traffic conditions can help reduce the likelihood of these types of crashes.
