Thomas Co., KS (February 24, 2026) – Eastbound Interstate 70 between Colby and Oakley reopened after an overnight crash involving two semi-trucks. The collision happened around 1:14 a.m. about five miles west of U-83 in Thomas County.
According to a crash report, a Freightliner traveling eastbound on I-70 at about 60 mph struck the left rear of another semi’s trailer. The second truck was also headed eastbound at the time. Both vehicles were damaged, and the crash led to a road closure that lasted several hours.
One driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the other driver was uninjured. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our thoughts remain with those affected as they continue to receive care and recover from their injuries.
Why Do Semi-Truck Crashes Often Lead to Highway Closures?
Crashes involving large trucks can block multiple lanes due to the size and weight of the vehicles. When trailers are struck, debris or cargo may spread across the roadway. Clearing these scenes often takes longer than standard passenger vehicle accidents.
Interstate highways such as I-70 carry steady freight traffic, especially overnight. Reduced visibility and driver fatigue can increase risk during early morning hours. Even at moderate speeds, the force of impact between two semis can cause significant damage.
Highway closures allow crews to remove damaged trucks safely and inspect the roadway before traffic resumes.
