Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes a single-vehicle rollover crash?
Rollovers usually happen when a driver loses control and the vehicle leaves the roadway, strikes an uneven surface such as an embankment or shoulder, and tips over. Speed, road conditions, and sudden steering corrections can all contribute.
Does speed make a rollover more severe?
Yes. Higher speed gives a driver less time to react and increases the force involved when a vehicle leaves the road or strikes an obstacle, which raises the chance of a rollover and the severity of injuries.
How do road and weather conditions play a role in crashes like this?
Loose gravel, narrow shoulders, rain, or uneven pavement can cause a driver to lose control, especially on rural highways with embankments or steep drop-offs close to the roadway.
What should someone do after witnessing or being involved in a rollover crash?
Call 911 immediately, try to stay out of traffic if it is safe to do so, and wait for fire and police to arrive before approaching a damaged vehicle.
